    • About Us

The Perception Medicine Foundation is a nonprofit start-up/social venture company dedicated to broadening our scientific and practical understanding of how the human mind directly influences the genesis, advancement, regression, and remission of disease.

More specifically, we believe that how a person perceives themselves and their relationship with the world around them has a dramatic influence on the origin, progression, and resolution of serious illness.

By changing the way we think, we can avoid many of our most serious diseases and resolve those that allopathic medicine has been unable to remedy. The Foundation seeks and supports breakthrough research, thinking, and tools for making “perception medicine” a standard practice in both personal and institutional settings.

      Mission

Building on the deep work of the fields of mind-body medicine, psychoneuroimmunology, epigenetics, meditation research, positive psychology, and other credible, innovative fields of study, we work with leading researchers to identify, develop, execute, fund, discuss, and collaborate on projects that deepen our scientific understanding of the connection between what goes on in our heads with what goes on in the physical systems of the body.

In addition to funding traditional research, we also explore linkages with more esoteric and less quantifiable sciences, taking a divergent, encompassing approach to any treatment or modality that offers reliable and credible indications of merit. We are thus committed to thinking outside the box when it comes to addressing serious disease and illness, while remaining grounded in established research and scientific protocols.

Our efforts are focused in three areas:

      • Convening thought leaders in diverse fields to shape and evolve the conversation of what constitutes “perception medicine” and its underlying model of healing.
      • Funding and collaborating on cutting-edge research projects that study the mechanisms involved with the mind-body healing response and that push the boundaries of existing knowledge.
      • Building a user-friendly archive of research that includes a database of remission cases and a directory of studies that address the mind-body healing dynamic. We also propagate our findings and insights through creative, dynamic, viewpoint-changing projects in diverse media that will enlighten the world to deeper truths about the healing process and our human potential.

    • Our Projects

The Foundation carries out its mission through a range of initiatives that speak to a lay audience and afflicted individuals interested in the power and potential of Perception Medicine and to those in the medical community who seek new ways to support the healing process.

      Clinical

The Foundation is currently in discussion with potential collaborators on developing a protocol that studies the impact of emotional and psychological changes on the physical systems of people suffering from a serious illness.

      Research

Because the research interests of the Perception Medicine Foundation are broad, there are a wide range of recent and ongoing studies that address the issues that we are passionate about. We will post summaries and links to such studies here.

JOHNS HOPKINS: Psilocybin produces substantial and sustained decreases in depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer: A randomized double-blind trial. Journal of Psychopharmacology

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA & NYU: Treatment of opioid use disorder with ibogaine: detoxification and drug use outcomes. The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

NYU: Rapid and sustained symptom reduction following psilocybin treatment for anxiety and depression in patients with life-threatening cancer: a randomized controlled trial. Journal of Psychopharmacology

IMPERIAL COLLEGE: Psilocybin with psychological support for treatment-resistant depression: an open-label feasibility study. The Lancet.

      Remission Bibliography

The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), which in 1993 published the largest database of medically reported cases of spontaneous remission in the world – more than 3,500 references from more than 800 journals in 20 different languages – defined spontaneous remission as "the disappearance, complete or incomplete, of a disease or cancer without medical treatment or treatment that is considered inadequate to produce the resulting disappearance of disease symptoms or tumor."

The term has come to also include the unexpected remission of serious diseases other than cancer, and to also be redefined by some as “radical” remission, since the remission process is rarely spontaneous and remains a unique phenomenon. And yet there are thousands of such cases throughout the world, and likely many more that have not been reported.

The Foundation is currently working with both IONS and Kelly Turner’s Radical Remission Project to revise and update this exceptional database. It will be searchable in a variety of ways and organized by cases both clinically proven as well as anecdotal, providing a critically useful resource for both doctors and those afflicted.

      Book: Overcoming the Impossible

Our founder, Steve Curtis, is currently completing a book, Curing Terminal: From Death-Sentence Diagnosis to the Healing Power of “Perception Medicine,” which tells the story of how he healed himself of T-cell lymphoma using non-traditional means, the path to summit Everest, and the research he discovered during his healing journey. Sign up now for access to the book.

    • Our Vision

To help build a new model of medicine where the power of the mind is both central and critical to the healing process; where drugs are not considered the most powerful means for addressing illness; and where our understanding of illness and what it takes to heal has experienced a revolution in perception.

    • Biofeedback Integration

Since the beginning of humanity, humans have endeavoured to understand and explore the unknown. With advances in our ability to navigate all parts of the earth, including the bottom of the ocean and now space, few things remain unexplored. One of the last few unexplored remnants of our world is the inner world and the relationship between how human thought, beliefs, relate to the working of our biology and the reality of our world.

Whether its a momentous occasion or an everyday activity, many thoughts influence ourselves and the pace of our life. Certain things may set us off or slip us into profound gratitude. Researchers around the world have sought to elucidate these thoughts into how they directly correlate to our behavior. Many studies and compelling research can be found to answer some of these fundamental questions of why we do things. We are missing out on a key link to explore these beliefs and thought patterns: How do we keep track of these thoughts?

Perception Medicine Foundation has launched a new project which sets out to track and understand various biological rhythms. By supporting research and companies in the space to expand human understanding into how we can modulate and take control of our own biology, we deepen the knowledge of how humans can use thought to take back their own health.

Biofeedback devices have emerged as a profound answer to track these thoughts and beliefs we hold. We can see everything from our heartbeat to our breath rate - and with the growing advancement of technology, we can easily pull up our biometrics on our cellphones, have it all interpreted for us to create implications for our health, and share with others.

      We can live more transparently.

We can modulate our own metrics to shape the health we want to have.

We can contribute, by modulating and tracking heart rhythms, to create a more heart-centred world.

By funding cutting-edge research, we understand what the link is, how thought relates to chemistry, finding correlative patterns by applying machine learning and artificial intelligence, we start to understand how technology will interface with consciousness and beliefs. In the coming decades, our project is ambitious and almost sci-fi in nature as we work with a group of leading thinkers in medicine, immunology, psychology, and technology.

    • Advisory Board

We are currently in discussions with potential advisory board members to help guide the foundation’s development and evaluate and recommend research projects that will further our mission.

These individuals include academic researchers, scientists, psychologists, doctors, and specialist practitioners, that have experience in both established fields of research that have informed and broadened our understanding of how the mind-body dynamic relates to health and healing, and new areas of exploration (usually underfunded) that represent possible breakthroughs into how the mind-body dynamic works.

      Steve Curtis

Entrepreneur/philanthropist Steve Curtis is CEO/Founder of ZAG, a Vancouver, BC-based international consumer products company specializing in ethnobotanicals, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplements that help people deal with such conditions as stress, anxiety, and pain.

Steve healed himself from Stage 4 T-cell lymphoma in his early twenties using a range of mind-body techniques that he discovered through extensive personal research. • “I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of inner peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion and elimination of ignorance, selfishness and greed.”
